The story

The Horticultural Research Institute at Vineland, Ontario — on the shore of Lake Ontario, twelve miles from Niagara Falls — began growing and hybridizing deciduous azaleas in the 1950s.

We have been growing eighteen of these azaleas and have been impressed by their beauty, their hardiness and their mildew resistance. They have done well in East Tennessee.

See Vineland Azaleas (PDF, azaleas.org) for more about their program, and photos of many of their azaleas.

The Vineland azaleas are known by number rather than name, and they are as cold-hardy as native azaleas get. If you garden on an exposed ridge, start here.
